Hezbollah is a military, political and social organization in Lebanon with strong ties to Iran and Syria, a bloc in Lebanon's Parliament and ministers in the cabinet. As a political party, Hezbollah runs schools and hospitals in Lebanon. In 2006, its militia members fought a 34-day war against Israel. The United States regards Hezbollah as a terrorist group that is financed by Iran to extend its influence.
Hezbollah has said that it would work to build what it called a "culture of resistance," and define the enemy of Lebanon as Israel and the United States. It also said it would make it a high priority to build a strong national military. The question now is whether Hezbollah as a powerful minotiry bloc will retain the power it had in the last assembly to essentially veto legislation in the Parliament.
Hezbollah demonstrates the fundamental error of Mr Bush's "war on terror". Necessarily, The US issued a list of "terrorist organizations" -- there had to be some idea of just who the enemy is in this war.
But the list is an impossible task. It is strictly American... no input from any other country. The mechanism defined for designating "terrorist organizations" is not public... so anything may happen.
And of course... it is stipulated that no American organization may be designated as "terrorist". Yup!
As the article demonstrates, Hezbollah is a multi-faceted entity. There are social services, a political party, and... a military arm.
That military arm is at war with Israel and the US. It does not target civilians... if one accepts Hezbollah's contention that Israeli "settlers" in occupied territories are "paramilitary" and therefore legitimate targets.
Hezbollah probably was responsible for the bombing of the US Marines in Beirut in 1983, and was perhaps involved in the attack on the USS Cole. Those are clearly military targets.
Hezbollah is an enemy organization... but not a terrorist organization.
