TV's 'Laugh-in' comic Dick Martin dies

advertisement

Dick Martin, the zany half of the comedy team whose "Rowan and Martin's Laugh-In" took television by storm in the 1960s, making stars of Goldie Hawn and Lily Tomlin and creating such national catch-phrases as "Sock it to me!" has died. He was 86.

Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

"Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In" was a comedy staple during my childhood also. But 86 years of living is still a pretty good run, all things considered.

Godspeed, Mr. Martin. Thank you for all the joy. [YouTube clip]

Nixon, Kirk Douglas, and John Wayne were all guests on the show, according to the article.

Nixon?

Two things about Laugh-in: They weren't shy about blasting every 'Establishment' value possible, including the Vietnam War, and they drove the network censors crazy.

Thats the time period I lived in the Washington DC area and many times the next day that radio talk shows would be talking about what was aired on Laugh-In the night before and it was great to listen to the ranges of reaction from pure shock, to "how could they say that !" to laughing along with it. Even the Washington Post often has articles and editorials about it as so much was aimed at events in DC with "Tricky Dicky" (Nixon).

I still never can understand how they could get away with what they did in that time period without the FCC shutting them down, but I don't think I ever missed a single show. Oh to have them around and invite Bush would be fun....

I liked the catchprase, "You can look it up in your Funk and Wagnalls!" For years I forgot where that came from.

My brother John's favorite was Pat Paulsen, and he's gone, too. (Was that "The Smothers Brothers"?)

R.I.P., Dick Martin.

Nixon?

Nixon mugged to the camera, and said "Sock it to me?" It was priceless.

Thanks, Dick Martin, for the memories.

One of Nixon's better moments, no doubt. It's in the YouTube link @ #2.1

Yes. Seeing the clip in this moment in time brings on mixed emotions. Just remember we're lucky that he touched our lives.
